Ανακοινώθηκαν οι υποψηφιότητες για τα φετινά βραβεία Όσκαρ, με το «The Power of the Dog» να συγκεντρώνει τις περισσότερες.
Πολλοί υποψήφιοι πιθανότατα εξεπλάγησαν βλέποντας τα ονόματά τους να περιλαμβάνονται στην τελική λίστα των υποψηφίων, ενώ άλλοι ευρέως αναμενόμενοι υποψήφιοι βρέθηκαν αποκλεισμένοι (στις ερμηνείες Lady Gaga, Caitríona Balfe, στην σκηνοθεσία Denis Villeneuve).
Το «The Power of the Dog» ηγήθηκε ανάμεσα στις υποψήφιες ταινίες με 12 υποψηφιότητες. Η σκηνοθέτης της ταινίας, Τζέιν Κάμπιον, έγραψε ιστορία καθώς έγινε η πρώτη γυναίκα που προτάθηκε περισσότερες από μία φορές για την καλύτερη σκηνοθεσία.
Νέο ρεκόρ σημείωσε και ο υποψήφιος για σκηνοθεσία Στίβεν Σπίλμπεργκ. Ως παραγωγός του «West Side Story», το οποίο κέρδισε συνολικά επτά υποψηφιότητες, ο Σπίλμπεργκ έχει δημιουργήσει τώρα 11 ταινίες που είναι υποψήφιες για καλύτερη ταινία, ένα νέο ρεκόρ για τα Όσκαρ.
